The Bonham

21st November 2016 6.30pm

Another voucher deal bought us to the Bonham Hotel to sample their chateaubriand. Situated in the West End, the Bonham’s restaurant is a classy dining room. We had a peruse of the menu for starters. It decided we’d skip that and perhaps have a dessert after the chateaubriand. The deal came with a bottle of wine but as I can’t have wine and my friend felt a full bottle on a Monday night might be a bit excessive, they swapped it for one glass of wine and a soft drink on our request.

We were given some warm bread whilst we waited for our dinner. Sadly the butter was hard and didn’t even melt on the warm bread which was a shame but the bread was nice. The main then came out on a nice board. The beef was requested medium rare. Perhaps a little on the rare side for my friend but I loved it and she still really enjoyed it. It was beautifully tender and full of flavour. It came with chunky chips which, whilst scorching hot, were excellent. There was also a rocket salad with a balsamic dressing which was delicious and had a sweet element. There was also a lovely peppercorn sauce which complemented all the elements. We both enjoyed this immensely.

We did decide we could fit in dessert, so I went for the chocolate mousse and my dining companion went for the passion fruit cheesecake. My mousse was very chocolatey but had a nice tart layer of raspberry sauce on the top to balance it out. Topped with a biscuit, aerated chocolate chunk and milk foam, this was a very pleasing dessert. On the other side of the table, my friend was enjoying her cheesecake. She would have preferred it without the orange peel but admitted that was personal preference. The mandarin ice cream that accompanied the cheesecake wasn’t overly strong in flavour but was good.

We enjoyed our time at the Bonham and noted that they have a very reasonable market menu which we may go back to try.
